Why I Decided to Create This Website Back to Table of Contents
As a residency faculty member and as a practicing family doctor, I constantly saw doctors (residents and attending physicians) speak to patients, and then the patients would come out and ask me, "What did the doctor mean? How bad is it really? What did the doctor say?" and things like this. I would, in a sense, be interpreting the "doctor-language" for the patients! Since May 2000, I have been at home with my family, and I thought, "Why not have a place where all the things that real people just don’t understand can be explained in plain English?". I hope that I can help you!

My Philosophy of the Doctor-Patient Relationship Back to Table of Contents
Yoga Mat
The doctor-patient relationship is just that—a two-way street. The doctor’s role is of advisor, counselor, and teacher; the patient has the burden of taking the advice given and incorporating it into his or her lifestyle. No one side has total responsibility for wellness, yet as the patient, you make choices, which can make or break your health. You can choose to eat well or poorly, to think positively or negatively, to care for your body or to neglect it or to actively damage it, to surround yourself with people who are encouraging and supportive or with people who are destructive to your soul and spirit.
Physicians and other health-care providers often forget to communicate to you in English, being so used to the language of medical professionals (which I call "doctor-talk"), and so leave you without the advice and counsel you need. Patients forget to (or are afraid to) make sure that they truly understand what is required on their part to heal, or they misunderstand words and concepts which seem simple to the doctor, who has spent years, sometimes decades, dealing with these things on a daily basis.
I feel that the doctor-patient relationship is vital to your health and healing, therefore I encourage you to learn to talk with your doctor, to print out what you read here and discuss what you are learning, so your partnership can work that much better.
